Lobelia is an annual plant native to North America. It is much loved in gardens because of its delicate purple flowers. It was called Indian tobacco because Native Americans smoked it. Interestingly, lobelia contains a substance called lobeline, which is similar to nicotine.
Lobelia has long been used in traditional herbal medicine as an expectorant for the upper respiratory tract. Expectorants help the body expel excess mucus from the airways. Lobelia is believed to accomplish this by relaxing and soothing the airways to facilitate the expulsion of mucus.
