The obstetrician that women gave birth to
This book, written with my spouse Lise Séguin, has three parts which, in various ways, can help to promote the humanization of births.
We have chosen to present it in the form of an interview to make it easier to read.
Based on actual events, the content of the volume addresses:
- the reality of couples:
“A woman whose pregnancy proceeded normally has everything she needs to give birth spontaneously. By taking the precaution of listening to her (listening to the couple too), of being attentive to what she is going through, of being open to what she is asking for and of understanding her needs, I have a good chance of knowing , through this listening, what is the road to follow in the management of work. »
- the reality of hospital workers:
While recognizing the importance and the need for the contribution of specialists who must intervene when a problem arises during childbirth: "my colleagues are called upon to avoid over-medicalization of childbirth, by interventions which do not not rely on good clinical judgement. »
- reflections that have come to me following various personal and professional situations that I have been confronted with:
These reflections greatly affect the human aspect of the profession. I had to question myself and position myself in relation to my work and the risk of routine in medical practice, also in relation to my family life, my physical and psychological health and the importance of clinical judgment and creativity in the intervention.
Finally, I would like to add that: "If this writing can help even a mother and a father to ensure that their baby is born in a context that best corresponds to their aspirations, I think it will have been worthwhile to invest myself in this adventure. »
